    Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine) FAQ

Umeshu is a traditional Japanese liqueur made by steeping unripe ume plums in shochu or sake with sugar. The result is sweet, tangy and fruity, with a lovely almond-like aroma from the plum stones.

Yes – in English, umeshu is usually called Japanese plum wine. Strictly speaking it is a liqueur rather than a wine, because the plums are steeped in alcohol instead of being fermented.

Enjoy it chilled, on the rocks, or topped with soda water for a refreshing umeshu highball. It also works well in spritzes and cocktails, and in winter many people in Japan enjoy it mixed with hot water.

Alongside classic umeshu you will find aged umeshu, and versions blended with green tea, yuzu, brown sugar (kokuto) or honey. If you love fruity liqueurs, also explore our yuzu liqueurs and KODAKARA fruit liqueurs.

CHOYA is Japan's best-known umeshu maker. Other favourites include HAKUTSURU and KODAKARA, each with their own style of Japanese plum wine.

Most umeshu is around 10–15% alcohol, similar to wine – check each product for details. Store it in a cool, dark place and keep it in the fridge after opening.
