    Japanese Sake FAQ

Sake is a traditional Japanese alcoholic drink brewed from rice, water, yeast and koji. Most sake is 14–16% alcohol, and styles range from light and dry to rich, sweet or sparkling.

Junmai Daiginjo and Daiginjo are premium, highly polished and fruity. Junmai Ginjo is elegant and fragrant. Junmai and Tokubetsu Junmai are fuller-bodied with umami. Honjozo and Futsu-shu are light everyday sakes. Nigori is cloudy and creamy, sparkling sake is bubbly, and aged sake is rich and nutty.

Start with taste – browse dry, semi-dry or sweet sake. For a first try or a gift, a 300ml or 720ml Junmai Ginjo is a safe choice. Popular breweries include Hakkaisan, Hakutsuru, Urakasumi and Ozeki.

Fragrant Ginjo and Daiginjo are best chilled. Junmai and Honjozo are often delicious gently warmed.

Keep sake in a cool, dark place, and in the fridge once opened. Enjoy it within a few weeks of opening for the best flavour.

Many of our sakes are imported in limited quantities from Japan. If your favourite is sold out, check back soon or try a similar style from the types above.
