    Japanese Beer FAQ

Most Japanese beer is a crisp, clean pilsner-style lager – light, refreshing and very easy to pair with food. Many brewers add rice to the malt for a drier, cleaner finish, while all-malt beers such as Yebisu and Suntory Premium Malt's have a fuller, richer flavour.

Japan's four major brewers are Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo and Suntory. At Sake Ichiban you'll find Suntory Premium Malt's, Sapporo and its premium Yebisu range, and Kirin Ichiban Shibori . Suntory Premium Malt's is our best-selling beer and a great place to start.

Yes. Japan has a thriving craft beer scene, known locally as ji-biru. Explore our Japanese craft beer, including Karuizawa Brewery, YOYOGI Beer and Yo-Ho Brewing's popular Yona Yona Ale.

Yes – Nippon Beer's Ryoma, Ryoma Lemon and Ninja are alcohol-free beers, so you can enjoy the taste of beer without the alcohol.

Crisp Japanese lagers are made for Japanese food: try them with gyoza, karaage, yakitori, tempura or sushi. Darker styles such as Yebisu Premium Black and Karuizawa Black match well with grilled meats and rich dishes.

Keep beer in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and enjoy it before the best-before date. Serve well chilled (around 4–6°C), and pour into a glass with a creamy head of foam, the classic Japanese way.
